With that in mind, we consulted a few of our friends who have kept goldfish for years to help you find some food options that will keep your goldfish happy and healthy.

What do goldfish eat?

Goldfish are natural omnivores. In the wild, their diet mainly consists of insects and different kinds of plants. However, in captivity, they are often fed with specific goldfish food.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against food that is designed especially for goldfish. But, that kind of food has less protein and more carbs, so it’s a good thing to feed your fish with additional food such as brine shrimps or bloodworms. Like any other animal, goldfish will benefit from having a varied and well-balanced diet.

How long can goldfish live without food?

One of the first questions new owners ask themselves. Well, you don’t need to worry. Your goldfish can survive several weeks without food. However, if you are on vacation or out of town for more than that, ask your friends to feed your goldfish. Actually, most of the health problems occur because of overfeeding, not the opposite.

Where can I buy goldfish food?

You can buy goldfish food in the local pet stores or online. It’s a good thing to support the local stores, but they are making more and more difficult for us fish keepers, cause they are overpricing their products. However, is your choice after all.

Aqueon Goldfish Flakes

There are a lot of high-quality foods on the market today and it’s hard to decide what would be the best choice for your goldfish. However, we did our research and narrowed down the best choices and it became obvious that Aqueon Goldfish Flakes stood out as one of the best.

The best thing about this formula is that it consists of lots of natural ingredients enrich with vitamins and minerals.
Plus, it’s a good size tube with large flakes. Your goldfish will simply love it. However, feeding your fish with only flakes can cause intestinal problems.

In general, flake food is not good for goldfish, simply because it’s on the surface like a floating pellet. That can attract the fish to go above the surface and ingest air which might lead to swim bladder problems.

However, we would still recommend this fish food because it has extremely high nutritional value. But, make sure you mix it with other foods. Aqueon Goldfish Granules is another great option from the same brand.

Hikari Saki-Hikari Fancy Goldfish

This is one of the few foods out there designed specifically with Fancy Goldfish in mind.

In general, there are plenty of reasons why to consider Hikari Saki as your primary goldfish food. The pellets are smaller than the regular pellets from this brand, but that’s actually a good thing. It’s rich in protein and does really make the fish grow faster.

Plus, it’s full of high-quality ingredients that enhance their natural colors. To wrap it up, Hikari Saki-Hikari Fancy Goldfish is a product worth to try.

Omega One Goldfish Medium Pellets

Omega One Goldfish Medium Pellets is another great option for Goldfish.

The main ingredient here that’s very important (my opinion anyway) is the natural beta-carotene color enhancer, but there are a few other high-quality ingredients as well. Combined together they are a nice variety to your goldfish diet.

The thing we really like, though, is that this fish food includes an Omega 3 & 6 HUFA’s which is great for the general health of the fish.

Highly recommend it.

New Life Spectrum Goldfish Formula

We’re wrapping out our list with a product we have recommend a few times before New Life Spectrum Goldfish Formula.

We didn’t list this higher, simply because we think the other formulas recommended above have better value.

However, there is not wrong to test it and see if your fish will like it.

So when you are setting out to plan a diet for your angels, finding out something that provides optimal nutrition and satisfies their needs can be kind of tough.

We did a lot of research, and we sampled a few different foods and that’s all for you! I hope that the effort we put in can help you find the best food for your angels. Let’s dive in.

Freshwater Angelfish can be seen in almost every beginner aquarist tank, and it’s easy to see why. With their beautiful flowing fins, color and unique shape these fish truly live up to their name.

Their name is actually a term used by pet stores owners to describe a small family of cichlids native to South America. However, a part of this family are a three separate species-Pterophyllum altumi, Pterophyllum scalare and Pterophyllum leopold.

The most commonly kept species in the aquarium is the Pterophyllum scalare. Angelfish are one of the oldest aquarium fish in the hobby. A hundred years ago the Angelfish was known as the king of freshwater aquarium fish species and was treated carefully as discus fish is treated today.

Angelfish Diet & Nutrition Needs

Angelfish will happily accept most of the commercial foods. They are not picky at all. However, feed them a variety such as flakes or small pellets to satisfy their nutrition needs.

And you really want to keep an eye on their feeding, since not eating for a very long time can be serious indicator that something is wrong with the fish.

In the wild, their primary foods are small insects, guppies, and invertebrates. So it’s a good thing to feed them with a frozen or live food once in a while.

Now, let’s look at some short reviews of the best food for angels.

San Francisco Bay Brand Freeze Dried Bloodworms

San Francisco Freeze Dried Bloodworms food is really cool stuff and very rich in lots of excellent ingredients. Nutritionally, there are few, if any, drawbacks.

We listed this first because, as we mentioned, angelfish need lots of protein! This food gets minimum 51.66% of its total calories from crude protein, which is higher than the typical fish food.

The other calories come from other ingredients such as crude fat, crude ash, crude fiber and a moisture. Plus, the fish just love the blood worms. They are addicted to this food.

Lastly, it’s big jar full of large blood worms. So yea…it’s a big winner.

TetraMin Tropical Flakes

TetraMin Tropical Flakes is usually on our go-to recommendations for almost every freshwater aquarium fish, and it’s always part of the foods that we give to our angelfish.

The main reason we like this fish food is that it’s got lots of Omega-3 fatty acids which make this food one of the best foods for angelfish growth.

Plus, this recipe contains ingredients that enhance angelfish natural colors. This fish food is an excellent value, and your angels will love it.

In other words, it’s a great formula.

Ken’s Premium Beefheart Flake

Ken’s Premium Beefheart Flake is a very good, protein-rich recipe with lots of great ingredients. It’s made with real beef hearts with one purpose, to get your angels in a spawning condition. It’s often used by breeders.

We would recommend it for any tropical fish, it’s a good food, and it’s not made it only for angels.

This particular fish food contains protein 46% min., fat 10% min., fiber 10% max., and moisture 10% max. Other ingredients we like include vitamin a, vitamin d3 supplement and vitamin b12 supplement.

We bought a small bag of this for our angels to try, and they love it.

BEST AFRICAN CICHLID FOOD

African cichlids are one of the most interesting species to keep in your aquarium. If you treat them right, they will live long and healthy lives. To achieve that you need to understand their dietary requirements.

How often should you feed African cichlids? Well, cichlids can consume a large amount of food in a short period of time, so it’s better to feed them small portions at a time. We also want to make sure that the food contains all the essential ingredients.

With that in mind, here are just a few recommendations.

New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula

I love New Life Spectrum Cichlid Formula. It’s what I feed my fish at home, and they love it too. I’ve fed them several different formulas, and they are just all really good.

One of the reasons I like this brand is that the ingredients are all super high-quality. I believe that all fish require balanced and varied diet and NLS provides that.

In this particular formula, generous inclusion rate of Garlic is included. That’s a good thing because garlic is a natural anti-parasite ingredient. Another thing worth to mention is the NLS is one of the best African cichlid food for color enhancement.

After several weeks of feeding my fish, there was a noticeable difference in the color. Again, this is what my fish eat on a daily basis, and I can’t really recommend it enough.

Hikari Sinking Cichlid Gold Pellets for Pets, Medium

This is another good cichlid food that you can use for color enhancement. The pellets are larger than usual pellets, which may be kind of a problem for smaller fish, but from my experience even smaller fish love it.

For instance, the main ingredient is Astaxanthin. The other ingredients help the fish increase and boost their immune system.

So why we are recommending it? First, the ingredients are high-quality. Second, if you want your African cichlids to reach their maximum potential, then Hikari Sinking Gold Pellets might be the right choice for you.

BEST FOOD FOR SOUTH AMERICAN CICHLIDS

Angelfish, one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish is part of the South American cichlids. And there are a lot of different kinds of fish in this family popular among aquarium hobbyist.

These types of cichlids are found in a range of sizes and with beautiful coloration. They can be fed with frozen food, live food, pellets, algae and flake food.

For instance, let’s look at some of the best fish food for South American cichlids.

Omega One Freshwater Flakes

Like most of the fish food we are recommending here, Omega One Freshwater Flakes contains a lot of high-quality ingredients. The main ingredient is a large quantity of fresh seafood protein.

Plus, there is some good source of fresh natural fats. In general, we are recommending it, not only for south American cichlids but also for all freshwater fish.

Mostly, though, we like that the ingredients are good and the sinking pellets are small, which makes them perfect for smallmouth fish.

Plus, it’s got plenty of good source of natural fats that increase fish appetite and energy. It’s rich with Omega 3&6 HUFA’s, which is very beneficial for the fish immune system and their general health.

Highly recommended.
